The 2018 Wilderness Restoration intern will assist Wilderness Restoration staff in the Division of Resources Management and Science at Yosemite National Park.  This project exposes the SCA intern to the full range of experiences in Wilderness Restoration including office and field work.  Experiences include, being on a dynamic, industrious wilderness restoration crew  implementing wilderness restoration including physical labor, data collection with Trimble GPS units, vegetation monitoring and photo monitoring protocols, processing of data, photos in the office, contributing to final reports, making maps/project information posters, and working with volunteers.
Both the office and field work can be tedious yet mentally and physically demanding and will provide an opportunity for the intern to improve her/his understanding of Wilderness, wilderness restoration, resources management, volunteers and decision making in a large park. The intern will be housed primarily in Tuolumne Meadows area.  Field work requires backpacking with a heavy load over uneven terrain and sometimes inclement weather conditions( hot& sunny OR cold and wet) for up to 8 day trips ranging in elevation from 4,000 feet to 10,000+. Field work involves conducting wilderness campsite, social trail and  meadow restoration projects vegetation and photo-monitoring protocols.   Opportunities may exist to work with hydrologists, wildlife biologists on a limited basis. 
Attention to detail, proficiency in common computer programs and technical tools, and strong writing skills, wilderness travel skills, Leave No Trace skills, plant ID and vegetation & photo monitoring skills.  Wilderness first aid a plus.  Knowledge and experience with data management, GPS , data dictionaries,  GIS, and simple data analysis helpful.
Characteristics of an ideal candidate include: flexibility, positive attitude, interpersonal skills, desire to learn, attention to detail, problem-solving/decision making ability, team player while being  able to work independently when appropriate, following protocols and procedures accurately to collect data, and an ability and desire to work both outdoors and indoors are ideal.  Work conditions include: hiking 10+ miles in various conditions (but mostly hot and sunny!), as well as long office days.  Endurance & a positive attitude are very important. Ability to effectively follow directions, pay attention to detail,  work well independently and in a team, and commitment to emotional and physical safety are also critical.  
Become familiar with coordinating a multi-faceted Wilderness Restoration program.  Opportunity to improve office skills in data management, GIS, creation of outreach materials, as well as learn skills in vegetation and impacts monitoring, GPS data collection, and wilderness skills.During time off, there are boundless recreational opportunities available in Yosemite National Park and the surrounding communities such as: rock climbing, hiking, nature observation, bicycling, fishing, swimming, and more. Living in Tuolumne Meadows provides easy access to recreational opportunities outside of the park.
