The U.S. Forest Service, Gunnison Ranger District, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison NFs is seeking an intern to collect wilderness campsite data in the La Garita Wilderness. The intern will work alongside a Forest Service Wilderness Ranger and gain valuable experience in inventory practices as well as insights into the operation of the Forest Service and its wilderness management activities. Primary responsibilities will involve an inventory of camping-related impacts in the La Garita Wilderness. These measurements will be taken using Forest Service protocols and GPS units. Work also includes assisting visitors and providing educational information about low impact (leave no trace) backcountry skills and maintaining backcountry campsites, signs, toilets and other facilities along popular destinations in the Wilderness.
Training will primarily be provided through on the job experience, although there will be an initial week of group training for new staff with the Forest Service.  A successful intern must be motivated, adaptable, independent, and come with some previous experience working in a mountain environment. Ninety percent of the assignments will be in the field and excellent physical conditioning is required. The intern routinely hikes off-trail for multiple miles over steep and brushy terrain to reach remotely located campsites.  The crew also spends a significant amount of time driving to reach these remotely located research sites.

This position serves the La Garita wilderness, and the majority of the work will consist of backpacking into remote locations and sleeping in a tent. When the intern is not working, the duty station will be split between Gunnison, CO (6 weeks) and Creede, CO (6 weeks). Frontcountry rooms are dormitory style.

There will be ample time to explore recreation and personal development opportunities in Gunnison, Creede, and throughout the region. A Forest Service vehicle will be provided for work related driving but it is recommended that you bring your own personal vehicle for commuting purposes. A personal vehicle will also allow the intern to take full advantage of a plethora recreational opportunities during their time-off.

  • Creede and Gunnison contain an abundance of summertime recreational activities, both outdoors and indoors. Gunnison is also home of Western State Colorado University.
