Gunnison Recreation Crew (4 members)
The Recreation Crew will consist of four crew members who will perform critical on the ground tasks. The crew members will work together and individually to accomplish tasks. The overall crew is made up of three types of crew members that will specialize in different roles within the team:
 
The Interpretive Field Ranger Crew Members (2) will participate in a variety of activities in the Crested Butte/Gunnison area, which lies within the GMUG National Forests. The following are duties and activities that the members will participate in:

  • Developing interpretive programs to share with the visiting public in busy areas and provide information.
  • Sharing conservation messages with our local communities at community events
  • Conveying information about recreation opportunities to our visitors
  • Leading participation in our volunteer programs and partner activities
  • Maintaining developed campgrounds, toilets, and various other developed sites
  • Conducting educational patrols in dispersed recreation areas on motorized and non-motorized routes.
  • This crew requires self-motivated and outgoing individuals that are able to identify opportunities and build and maintain relationships.
  • Implementing the Gunnison Travel Management Plan by restoring non-system routes, installing and maintaining gates / signs, and educating visitors about travel restrictions.

The Developed Recreation Crew Member (1) will participate in a variety of activities in the Crested Butte/Gunnison area, which lies within the GMUG National Forests. The following are duties and activities that the member will participate in:

  • Maintaining and cleaning developed campgrounds, toilets, trailheads and other recreation facilities
  • Making contact with the visiting public in busy areas and provide information.
  • Sharing conservation messages with our local communities at community events
  • Conveying information about recreation opportunities to our visitors
  • Leading participation in our volunteer programs and partner activities
  • Conducting educational patrols in dispersed recreation areas on motorized and non-motorized routes.
  • This position requires a self-motivated and outgoing individual that is able to identify opportunities and build and maintain relationships.
  • Implementing the Gunnison Travel Management Plan by restoring non-system routes, installing and maintaining gates / signs, and educating visitors about travel restrictions.

 
   


The Wilderness Crew Member (1) will participate in a variety of activities in the Crested Butte/Gunnison area, which lies within the GMUG National Forests. The following are duties and activities that the member will participate in:

  • Developing Leave No Trace messages to share with the visiting public of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness (MBSW).
  • Sharing educational messages in the field to our local community and visiting public
  • Maintaining permit boxes and signage for the MBSW
  • Hiking on remote and rugged trails in variable weather conditions
  • Reporting trail and sign damage in the MBSW, repairing minor issues as capable
  • Providing maintenance to Wilderness trails, including clearing trees off the trail with hand saws 
  • Maintaining and cleaning wilderness trailheads and toilets associated with the Maroon-Bells Snowmass Wilderness, specifically focusing on the Crested Butte side of the area in the busy Gothic corridor and East Fork Trailhead. 

This crew is located in Gunnison, CO, and the duties encompass the entire Gunnison Ranger District, which encompasses over 1.3 million acres of the Central Rockies.
We have two weeks of in depth training at the beginning of the crew’s service, this includes first aid, CPR and AED training, Forest Service training such as defensive driving and other technical training, as well as geology, ecology, cultural history, valuing people and place, and interpretation.

The Gunnison/Crested Butte area offers an abundance of opportunities to recreate, including motorized and non-motorized opportunities, dryland and over-snow, running and still water. Gunnison is also home of Western Colorado University, so educational goals are attainable locally.


Compensation amounts:

  • $650 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $160 - weekly living allowance
  • $325- monthly health insurance stipend
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($1,612 education award)
  • Housing

  • These position is located in Gunnison, CO, and the duties encompass the Maroon Bells Snowmass wilderness and the adjacent impacted areas.
  • We have two weeks of in depth training at the beginning of the intern’s tour, this includes first aid, CPR and
    AED training, Forest Service trainings such as defensive driving and other technical training, as well as
    interpretive training.
