This position is located within the Water Quality Group of the Upper Colorado Region, Bureau of Reclamation, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Upper Colorado Region manages water and related resources within the Colorado, Rio Grande, and Great Basin river drainages in the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. The Water Quality Group conducts field water quality monitoring investigations on Reclamation projects within those states on reservoirs including Lake Powell (AZ-UT), Flaming Gorge (UT-WY), Navajo (CO-NM), and many more.
The responsibilities and duties of the intern will include assisting with preparing and conducting water quality field investigations on Reclamation reservoirs and for other Reclamation projects. Investigations on Reclamation reservoirs will be conducted from watercraft operated by trained Reclamation personnel. The intern will receive training on the use of water quality sampling apparatus and equipment and in sample and data collection methods. The intern will assist with documentation of field conditions, data, and samples. On other Reclamation projects the intern may assist with groundwater monitoring and sampling and stream water quality monitoring and sampling. The intern will assist with processing and reviewing data for accuracy and completeness. The intern will receive training on and utilize general and specialized computer software to review and summarize data. The intern will also assist with analyzing and preparing data for technical reports and studies and other water quality related tasks.
Required Skills
To be eligible for the internship applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree, or higher, in an environmental or water resource science or engineering related field. Applicants should provide transcripts showing coursework in hydrology, watershed science, environmental engineering, geology, biology, chemistry, etc. or equivalent education or experience. Proficiency with general computer software or specialty software including database programs, programming languages, GIS systems, environmental modeling programs, etc. is preferred.
Applicants must be in excellent physical condition to handle the rigors of the work. Field work will be performed in various environments with exposure to extreme weather conditions. The work will require walking short distances over uneven and steep terrain, and lifting and transporting, for short distances, objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
The selected applicant will be required to complete a security background check prior to beginning service.
Compensation amounts:
- $25- weekly commuting allowance
- $175 - weekly living allowance
- $3,000- duty-related travel funds
- AmeriCorps eligible ($2,417 education award)
