Position Description: This unique internship with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System is stationed at the Northeast Regional Office in western Massachusetts.  This intern will be a part of the regional visitor services team who provides support and resources to refuge staff for visitor services program across refuges, such as hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, interpretation, and environmental education events and activities.  Specific duties are likely to include assisting the regional visitor services staff with writing a strategic plan for our newest Urban Wildlife Refuge Partner city, sharing our successes and events through compiling monthly newsletters from various refuges and regional programs, developing and writing visitor services plans, updating refuge information for Congressional staff, and coordinating with External Affairs on projects to share our successes and upcoming events with the public.  The work involved will be mostly based in an indoor office setting, however, some travel opportunities will be available to assist refuges within our 13-state region. 

Desired skills and abilities include:

o   Motivated, enthusiastic, and self-starter mentality for independent project work with active participation with the regional visitor services team.

o   Confidence representing ideas and presenting information in meetings and outside of the regional office (primarily to internal audiences and occasionally to external audiences)

o   Enthusiasm to work outdoors (when opportunities come available)

o   Ability to communicate ideas and information into written documents, short summaries, or other formats as needed

Valid driver’s license is preferred.

Unmet Need:  This position will assist with public use and visitor services needs across 73 national wildlife refuges from Maine to Virginia.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities:  The Northeast Regional Office is located in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts with numerous communities supporting five colleges. In the shadow of the Holyoke Range, these communities offer countless opportunities for outdoor recreation, culture, and entertainment.
