Interns will assist Tongass NF staff with visitor services engagement work at the Anan Wildlife Observation Area. This will include greeting outfitters and clients while taking their permits, providing mandatory safety briefings for all guests, as well as spending time at the observation deck to help answer visitor questions. Additionally interns will provide educational information to the visiting public, manage crowd/people flow, and ensure there are no negative bear and human interactions. Other duties include maintaining the cleanliness of the observation area by removing contained human waste containers from the deck outhouse. This is a rifle/shotgun bearing position - therefore candidates need to be comfortable handling federal firearms and working around both brown and black bears after receiving USFS bear safety training. Selected candidates will be subject to a drug-test after hiring. 

Compensation amounts:
  • $1,500 - RT travel allowance to work site and back
  • $280 - weekly living allowance
  • $200 - PPE boot stipend
  • AmeriCorps eligibility (Education award of approximately $1,500)

Please note that this is a rilfle bearing position. All candidates must be willing to carry a federal firearm during on-duty hours after receiving USFS training. Canddiates must submit to a drug-test before their position start date. 

  • The Anan Wildlife Observatory is located on the mainland within Alaska’s Tongass National Forest roughly 35 miles south of the town of Wrangell. It is a rural and isolated area only accessible by boat or float plane.
