The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service currently has an opening available for a 52-week Visitor Services Outreach Intern at the Lenape National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which consists of four national wildlife refuges located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The intern will be responsible for conducting urban partnership outreach, general visitor outreach, educational programming, trail maintenance, and visitor center operations. The position will involve working a schedule of Wednesday-Sunday, with anticipated work hours of 8AM-4PM. Work is anticipated to include staffing the Visitor Contact Station at the Wallkill River NWR on Saturdays and staffing the Great Swamp NWR Visitor Center on Sundays; the Wednesday-Friday schedule will include working at both of those refuges in New Jersey and the refuges located in Pennsylvania and New York. The intern will be expected to greet visitors in a professional manner, work with educators and non-profits to educate youth according to school curriculum standards, interact with refuge and non-profit volunteers to accomplish tasks, travel to urban environments and conduct outreach with underserved and underrepresented communities, work in adverse weather and environmental conditions while maintaining refuge trails to ensure safe access for visitors, and assist other refuge programs (maintenance, biology, visitor services, management, administration) on miscellaneous duties.

A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle will be required for transportation to the refuges each day; a refuge vehicle may be available once arriving on the refuge each day. The intern will receive a (pre-tax) living allowance of $600/week and a commuting allowance of $75/week.  Housing costs will be paid for directly by SCA once housing is identified.  The intern intern will be responsible for using their personal vehicle or a vehicle they rent using the transportation allowance to travel (commute) from their place of residence to the wildlife refuges each day. The intern is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award nor Health Insurance.
  • The position will be located at the Lenape National Wildlife Refuge Complex at the Cherry Valley NWR (Stroudsburg, PA), Great Swamp NWR (Basking Ridge, NJ), Shawangunk Grasslands NWR (Wallkill, NY), and Wallkill River NWR (Sussex, NJ).
