SCA NYS Parks Corps Overview
: The SCA New York State Parks Corps covers five regions of New York State: Allegany, Central, Finger Lakes, Niagara, and Thousand Islands. Corps members are placed at one of these host sites and serve at the state parks in their region. Service activities range from providing environmental education and interpretation, to trail restoration and volunteer initiatives. Members join together regularly for trainings, service projects, or other community events.  The mission of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources.

Community Needs that the Program Serves: 
Allegany State Park averages over 1.5 million visitors a year and the number one rated activity for those patrons is hiking. The Allegany State Park Trail Stewardship Program serves as the sole source of trail maintenance and restoration for Allegany State Park’s 250 miles of multi-use trail. As the leader of this volunteer program, the SCA member will be responsible for keeping this valuable resource open and safe for the public to utilize. 

AmeriCorps Member Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Continue the development of our Volunteer Trails Stewardship program at Allegany State Park which will include: soliciting volunteer assistance in performing manual work on recreational trails, organize trail maintenance technique trainings for volunteers and organize and perform trail work
  • Intern will be expected to sustain communication with multiple trail user groups in order to facilitate or conduct large scale trail work days or events
  • Trail work will be performed in Allegany State Park and will include but not limited to: trail clearing, brushing, signing; identifying, documenting and mitigating hazards on horse, hiking, mountain bike, snowmobile and snowshoe trails; make physical repairs to trail surfaces, culverts, etc.
  • At the conclusion of the 10 month term, the incumbent will also be required to produce an organized trail report summarizing all work conducted and trail deficiencies discovered during this program as well as an organized syllabus outlining the volunteer training program segments.
  • All SCA Parks Corps members are required to attend monthly SCA events and complete SCA/Americorps paperwork and reporting. This will account for roughly 15% of your time

Performance Goals:
Goal 1: Retain the current number of Trail Stewards and expand the membership.
Goal 2: Continue to broaden the programs outreach by engaging new organizations and clubs to participate in the volunteer trails program.
Goal 3: Expand the exposure of the Trails Program into other parks in the Allegany Region. I.E ( Lake Erie SP, Long Point SP, and Midway SP)

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills and comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to lift medium to heavy loads
  • Ability to work in inclement weather 
  • Proficient in land navigation
  • Academic background that includes credit hours in any of the following: recreation, forestry, natural resources, environmental management and/or experience in recreational trail development and maintenance
  • Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Over the age of 18
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a background check

Training Opportunities: All Parks Corps members receive Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Leave No Trace Trainer Course, American Canoe Association QuickStart Your Canoe and professional development.  The steward will receive Game of Logging Levels 1 and 2, Conservation Work Skills and other opportunities that arise.
