2019 SCA Sustainability Fellow: City of Pittsburgh Electric Vehicle Fellow
 

As part of its third Climate Action Plan, the City of Pittsburgh has committed to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030, and a zero waste goal for city operations. The City is seeking an SCA Fellow to advance the project completion of the Second Avenue charging station, and to help guide policy and implementation for an EV fleet through convening of the EC Policy Working Group, additional procurement analysis and charging unit deployment, and outreach and education through EV workshops and trainings, and advancement of the Roadmap to Zero Waste through research, and staff training and education. 

The Fellow will assist with project development and project management for the site selection and deployment of EV charging stations, managing the coordination of the City’s EV policy team, educate city staffers on EV operations and benefits and identify opportunities for vehicle electrification within the City’s fleet. The Fellow will also  analyze and develop internal procedure and procurement policies and assist with staff development towards the implementation of the City’s Roadmap to Zero Waste. The Fellow will assist the Resiliency Department by researching best practices from other cities with zero waste goals. The fellow will design a City of Pittsburgh zero waste resource guide that can be used for special events, commercial and instutiions, municipal buildings, and schools.
Applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred, and should hold a strong interest in electrification, public policy and program management. Experience with policy and program analysis, project management, and environmental program operations is strongly desired. 

Additionally, applicants must have the ability and willingness to work some weekend and evening hours as special events require, possess strong oral and written presentation skills, and have the ability to work in a team and build partnerships with project stakeholders.


Responisibilities will include:

30%: Development and delivery of educational content via the E-Mobility Workshop in partnership with 100 Resilient Cities and Siemens, and development and delivery of zero waste education for internal staff. 
30%: Support the development of the Second Avenue Fleet Charging Hub. Research and further development of EV Procurement Analysis and EV Charging unit deployment 
15%: Support the coordination of city departments and partners and convene the EV Policy Working Group and Roadmap to Zero Waste to advance plan implementation
10%: Development of best practices and recommendations based on research into zero waste policies in other cities. 
10%: Support Community Outreach - The Fellow will serve as the outreach coordinator for EV and Zero Waste programming by developing partnerships to maximize community education, media coverage, and City staff engagement.
5%: Professional Development - The Department of City Planning will work with the Fellow to create a multi-faceted position with various networking, education and project planning opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in environmental science, sustainability, business or public policy
  • Experience in project design, management and implementation
  • Leadership experience
  • Ability to work independently within an organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (writing sample required)
  • Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA
  • Technical Analysis and Experience with Energy and Fleets
  • Public Policy Development

Compensation: $350/wk living stipend, extensive training, Americorps Education Award,  healthcare insurance, workers compensation, relocation support. Note: Stipends and allowances are subject to state, local and federal taxes.
