Position Summary
The External Affairs Program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) seeks a Social Media and Online Content Intern to assist in nationally showcasing and growing the visibility of the Zeta Days at the Refuge initiative before members of the African American community and the general public.

The Zeta Days at the Refuge initiative is one that encourages members and youth associated with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated to visit National Wildlife Refuges across the country to engage in outdoor recreation as well as educational and service activities related to wildlife conservation.  Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is a national African American sorority with over 800 chapters across the country and more than 125,000 members.  In addition to student and post-graduate members, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated includes a nationwide network of youth groups.

This is a short-term internship position for an individual with knowledge and experience in social media and its best practices.  To maximize impact within the social media space, the ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling, connecting with people, and bringing initiatives and organizations to life.  To most effectively connect with individuals and organizational stakeholders, the ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the African American community and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing and implementing a social media strategy for the Zeta Days at the Refuge initiative to increase outreach, awareness and engagement in the African American community
  • Help establish and track metrics to evaluate the components and contents of the social media campaign to guide and inform future strategies
  • Write, edit, and post content for various social media channels related to the initiative, ensuring consistent engagement, voice, and brand across all channels
  • Coordinate content with internal stakeholders for social media properties on a day-to-day basis
  • Consistently and proactively engage with digital supporters of the initiative
  • Escalate issues, observations, opportunities, and insights to supervisor
  • Act as internal and external point of contact for social inquiries related to the initiative; give counsel on social guidelines as necessary; encourage staff and digital supporters to contribute high quality field content, personal stories or relevant content to further engage African American audiences
  • Prepare Social Media After Action Report to help identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for future engagement through social marketing of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and the broader African American community

  • Knowledge, skills and abilities to contribute to social media planning and execution
  • Experience using social media software and technologies preferred
  • Experience creating compelling and engaging social media content preferred
  • Experience promoting an organization and its programs to segmented audiences through social media preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, and multicultural skills
  • Ability to confidently contribute to a cross-divisional team 
  • Ability to think strategically, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Satisfactory background check to ensure reliability, trustworthiness and suitability for the job

Education and Experience

  • Student working on Bachelor’s or advanced degree in media communications preferred
  • Experience engaging target audiences for nonprofits or similar organizations through social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram
  • Experience with social media best practices, tools and analytics
  • The Intern will work at the headquarters facility of the USFWS.
  • Training will primarily be informal and acquired on-the-job.
  • Educational opportunities include working within the External Affairs Program of the USFWS. Beyond working on assigned day-to-day tasks, the intern will be given the opportunity to learn about the work performed by each of the Program’s 4 divisions.
