This intern will work with Forest Service employees and the recreating public on the Kern Wild and Scenic River, near Kernville, California. The Kern River is located on the Sequoia National Forest in the Southern Sierra mountains. This position is considered a “shore-based river ranger” with duties that include contacting the public in developed and undeveloped campgrounds and day use areas along the river corridor, providing public education related to general area information, rules and regulations, campfire programs and Leave No Trace principles.  This area is very heavily visited during weekends and holidays, with a large percentage of visitors being Spanish speaking. An intern’s ability to speak Spanish will be beneficial in order to communicate with and provide education to the visitors.  The intern will help promote a positive recreation experience for shore-based and water-based recreationists. The intern will work with the recreation and fire prevention staff as well as community volunteer organizations to clean recreation facilities, perform sign and recreation site maintenance, pick up trash and remove graffiti. Tracking visitor use information  will also be conducted to help the Forest consider site carrying capacity limits. The work will involve weekend and holiday periods, with a schedule of five days a week. 
  • Kernville, California - approximately one hour from Bakersfield in the Southern Sierra Mountains.
  • Forest Service vehicle operations, handheld radios, effective public contacts, first aid/CPR (likely), balancing public use with resource protection, management of Wild and Scenic Rivers.
  • Managing high use recreation sites; communicating with members of the public who speak both English and Spanish; two way radio use; camping, fishing, whitewater and lake boating, hiking, mountain bike riding.
