Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is recruiting interns to who focus on both restoration and community engagement around their restoration work. Specific duties will include: community engagement programs, working with youth and volunteer groups, informal presentations about the project, plant propagation, treatment of invasive species, collection of seeds, dispersal of seeds and installation of plant plugs. Funding will provide for required supplies and equipment.

This team will be focused on restoring degraded wetlands adjacent to the park’s environmental education center. This work will improve educational programs and enhance the experience of the park visitors using the associated trail system. To showcase that fact, the team will be involved in a variety of community engagement activities alongside their restoration work. This will allow them to rotate their duties and gain a broad perspective on NPS careers. The team will work closely with the park’s education specialist and outreach coordinator to assist in leading wetlands education programs with school groups visiting the park, attending off-site outreach events in the community, and assisting with public stewardship and wetlands programs for the general park visitors. The Douglas Center received over 8000 visitors in 2015 and providing a high quality natural experience is important for park goals.

Restoring these degraded wetlands will require management and vegetation manipulation. The quantity and range of tasks will depend on the degree of wetland degradation. Vegetation manipulation will be comprised of invasive species control, dispersal of native seed, and installation of plant materials. Restoring a native assemblage of plants will require seed collection, seed dispersal, plant propagation and plant installation.

Offer of AmeriCorps Education Award is subject to availability.
