When conditions are not ideal for burning, members may assist the partner with other projects which will vary depending on placement. Past projects have included vegetation removal, fire line preparation, equipment maintenance, and other work duties. In addition, members will receive job training, personal development, and natural resource management skills while working with these partners.
Certifications provided include: (Some of the below certifications may not be offered at your specific placement. Please confirm with your host partner at the time of the interview)
- Fire Training (Red Card S-130, S-190) (Fire Fighter Type II)
- Chainsaw Training (S-212)
- CPR / Basic First Aid
- ATV / UTV Operation
- Defensive Driving
Compensation will vary depending on placement but will include the following:
- $160 - $200/week living allowance, depending on placement site
- A one-time ($650 - $1,100) travel allowance (Depending on if a personal vehicle is required)
- Housing will be provided by the host partner and will be shared with others. Description of housing will be provided by host partner.
- Eligibility for an AmeriCorps education award worth $1,538.36 and for some of our positions enrolling in AmeriCorps will be mandatory.
- Fire boots (some host sites provide a $200 allowance to pay for fire boots)

Requirements:
All members are required to pass an arduous pack test to participate in the program. This includes walking 3 miles with a 45-pound weighted vest in under 45 minutes. Members that do not pass the pack test will be dismissed from the program. In addition, prescribed burning is condition-dependent and members may be required to work long hours and/or weekends depending on direction from the partner.
Placement:
NOTE: Applicants will be placed at a site based on their preference, experience, and qualifications. Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis, but those submitted by October 5th, 2020 will be given priority with interviews to start in the weeks that follow.
