Created in 2015 as a New York State Governor’s Initiative, the Excelsior Conservation Corps (ECC) is a seven-month residential AmeriCorps program that partners with the NYS Commission on National and Community Services, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and NYS Oﬃce of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYS OPRHP).
Scope of Work
The ECC works on environmental stewardship projects on NYS DEC and NYS OPRHP public lands that result in the protection of natural resources, thus helping to sustain these resources for the long term benefit of the New York State community. Based on the needs identified by partners, SCA Excelsior members will serve NY State’s public lands by carrying out such responsibilities such as invasive species removal, timber stand improvement, prescribed burns, trail construction and/or maintenance (including stone work, bog bridging, box step construction, and retaining wall construction), basic carpentry, and other chainsaw intensive projects.
The SCA Excelsior Corps places a special emphasis on furthering member education and career development. The program will provide an array of training to help members to develop leadership and marketable skills that are designed for a future in conservation or related fields.
- Must be between the ages of 18-26 (Veterans up to 28)
- High School Diploma or equivalent background.
- Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent residents with the appropriate documentation
Members receive a bi-weekly stipend of $360, food and housing for the duration of their service and deferment of eligible student loans. After completion of 1,200 hours of service, members will also receive an education award of $4,336.50 for future education opportunities or past student loans.
There is no travel reimbursement for this position.

This position requires that you become enrolled in AmeriCorps. If you are selected for this program, please be sure to accept AmeriCorps during the SCA offer process. No travel allowance will be offered for this position even if it is stated on your confirmation of acceptance.

Members will travel to their worksites from their provided houses from Monday- Friday. Worksites will be within an hour drive of their housing. On site, members will complete needed stewardship projects on both NYS DEC and NYS OPRHP land. Members may be housed on their worksites later in the season.
Training will be provided, including SCA’s Conservation Workskills, CPR and WFA (Wilderness First Aid), carpentry, iMapInvasives and chainsaw certification.
There will be a strong emphasis on professional development opportunities in the Excelsior Corps. Members will participate in extensive training prior to engaging in service activities. All members will receive one week of program orientation, Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification course, Work Skills training and one week of Leave No Trace (LNT) training. Group training will continue throughout the year with a focus on professional development and highly technical trainings will be provided to meet the needs of individual stewardship teams. Members will engage in regular professional development workshops and will have time to work on personal and professional goals individually and with an Excelsior staff member.
