Position ID

As a Natural Resource Steward you may be required to:

Perform trail maintenance activities include removing blowdown, installing or replacing trail markers and signs, trail brushing (side and overhead cutting), cleaning drainage devices; removing/rehabilitating primitive campsites and work with other Forestry and Forest Ranger staff as requested; Work in a remote back-country setting in all types of weather conditions. Perform maintenance activities of Back-Country Lean-Tos (to include staining and other activities). Perform Hand Tool maintenance including keeping tools sharp and in good working condition. Monitor public use and ecosystem condition, reporting on them according to prescribed protocols. Record each day’s activities in a Daily Log book. Educate the public on the proper use of Forest Preserve and provide information on trail conditions and Rules and Regulations; educate the public regarding current topics that could influence fragile ecosystems; notify the Forest Ranger and Forester about potential problems such as hazardous trail conditions, public use, and emergencies encountered; Use a portable radio to communicate with dispatch, Forest Rangers, Foresters and other DEC personnel as needed.

Participate in DEC training as required and provide support for existing volunteer networks on trail maintenance.

Possible overnight backpacking trips for remote trail projects.
