The Black Hills National Forest is seeking Two (2) Individual Placements (18+ yrs. of age) to be Motorized Trail Rangers thru the summer and fall of 2019.  These individual placements would be part of a 5-person team interacting with the public on motorized trails.   The Black Hills National Forest has one of the largest Motorized Trail Systems in the United States, with over 660 miles of trail, and 3000 miles of roads.  The Black Hills is quickly becoming a major destination to experience Motorized Trail Riding in a scenic landscape.

We are seeking:
 - Individuals with High Energy.
 - Individuals with people skills, that like to provide assistance and engage with the public.
 - Individuals that like to ride ATVs, or are willing to learn to ride ATVs.

What does the job entails:
 - Individuals would work 5-days a week, generally Wednesday thru Sunday.
 - Individuals would be riding All Terrain Vehicles (a.k.a. = “4-Wheelers”), and potentially UTVs (a.k.a. = “Side-by-Sides”), on motorized trails.
 - Interactions with the public include:
     1) showing the public various wayfinding methods (Paper Maps, GPS Maps, “AVENZA” Phone Apps).
     2) providing “Tread Lightly” information (specifically ‘How to ride and minimized damage to the trails when riding’) at trailheads and on the trail.
     3) providing information where riders can obtain permits.
- Individuals will utilize Tablets to document and photograph daily activities including:
     1) trails ridden,
Motorized Trail Permit compliance,
documenting Trail Maintenance issues encountered.

You would receive training using equipment including:
  - All Terrain Vehicles (a.k.a. = “4-Wheelers”), and potentially UTVs
(a.k.a. = “Side-by-Sides”),
  - Computer Tablets
  - Portable Radios

  • Black Hills National Forest - the portion within western South Dakota.
  • Training in operation of ATVs (& possibly UTVs), Computer Tablets, & Portable Radios.
    Certification - Government Driver’s License for ATVs (& possibly UTVs).
    Depending on timing First Aid / CPR may also be provided.
  • The Black Hills Area has a plethora of recreation opportunities. On the Forest there is: camping, hiking, some of the best rock climbing in the US, boating, motorized trail riding. 5 National Parks and 2 State Parks within a 3-hour drive of Rapid City.
