This internship involves working at a remote hatchery site on the Prince William Sound - Armin Koernig - in conjunction with maintenance and fisheries staff. The basic function of this position is to help carry out preventative maintenance and repair duties for the efficient operation of the overall hatchery facilities and equipment - as well as assist fisheries staff with day-to-day needs, including but not limited to the handling and sampling of hatcheries fish.

Responsibilities include:
  • Hatchery Systems Equipment Maintenance (essential for maintaining the health of fish populations)
    • ​Assist in maintaining and repairing hatchery equipment such as generators, hatchery heating and hot water system, pumps and fuel distribution systems, recycle systems, lake pump house and emergency pump systems, lighting systems, hatchery domestic water and wastewater system, and more. 
  • Site Assistance
    •  Hands-on maintenance of loader, generators, fuel pumping system, saws, outboard motors, boats, ice augers, cement mixers, steam cleaner and pressure washer, snow removal eqiupment, and hand fisheries tools. 
    • Intense hands-on snow removal as needed
  • Fish Projects Participation:
    • Interact with and educate members of the visiting public about the hatcheries program and facilities
    • Assist fisheries staff as needed with other fisheries management tasks. This may include sampling and transportation of salmon eggs. 

Candidates should possess the following:

  • Experience living in remote natural surroundings for extended periods of time
  • Basic knowledge of rough and finish carpentry
  • Interest in fisheries management and fish hatcheries
  • Physical fitness
  • The ability to work well as a team members in cold, adverse, and remote conditions
  • Waterproof rubberized rain gear
    • E.g. insulated xtratuf boots, grundens or helly hansen bibs/rainjackets, waterptoof gloves, waders, etc…

Compensation amounts:

  • $1,400 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $400 - weekly living allowance
  • Free housing and board

  • Remote fisheries camps throughout the Prince William Sound Area are where will work will be done. This area is a temperate rain forest which can often be windy, rainy, cold, and overcast. In the winter seasons snow is frequent. Service locations are isolated with limited visitors. Wildlife is abundant.
