Recreation intern will work with Forest Service Recreation staff to learn operation, maintenance and visitor communications on the Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest. The intern will serve in District Recreation Fee sites, learning about operating and maintaining various high use recreation sites, both Day Use and Overnight Use. These sites are located in the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range on the Lower Kern River, Lake Isabella, Oak Flat Lookout in the Greenhorn Mountains and on the Kern Plateau. Interns will engage in visitor contacts, monitoring visitor use, and all aspects of recreation site facility operations, cleaning and maintenance. Safety training will be provided as well as provisioning with Government Driver’s License. Dates are approximate and flexible, but the focus is the heavy use recreation season - between mid-May and through Labor Day if possible.
  • Kern River Ranger District, located at the southern end of the Sequoia National Forest in Central California. Recreation sites on the Forest range from areas of high-desert lake environment to wild and scenic rivers to high country timber.
  • Recreation site maintenance; communicating with visitors; first aid/CPR; specific safety training related to recreation tasks.
  • Managing high use recreation sites, working with visitors with a wide variety of backgrounds, site maintenance and operations. Recreational opportunities include white water boating, mountain bike riding, lake recreation, hiking, fishing and camping.
