The intern will have an opportunity to work with park rangers, park guides, volunteers, and other interns at Tonto National Monument, while learning about the significant natural and cultural resources of the Sonoran Desert. Job duties will include staffing the visitor center, collecting fees, providing information at the Lower Cliff Dwelling, developing and presenting interpretive programs, and assisting with special events.

This internship may also assist with special projects such as editing the park website, creating content for social media, giving Upper Cliff Dwelling tours, and assisting Natural/Cultural resources staff.

Through this experience, the intern will learn about the Salado Archeological Complex, cliff dwellings, the National Park Service, and the important role public lands play in safeguarding natural and cultural resources. The intern will gain invaluable work experience in a range of duties, from dealing with the public to creating engaging interpretive programs. This professional experience might lead to future career opportunities with the National Park Service and/or other federal land management agencies.

Compensation amounts:
  • $1,100 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $385 - weekly living allowance
  • Housing

  • Roosevelt, Arizona is a rural area in the southern part of the state. It is very scenic surrounded by saguaros and Roosevelt Lake. The climate is mild in the winter months and very hot in the summer months.
  • The intern will have opportunities for training in interpretation, digital media, accessibly, CPR/First Aid ,and safety. The intern will work closely with experienced staff on a variety of programs and projects related to interpretation.
  • There are a number of excellent cultural resources at the site to learn about the Salado and archeology in the Southwest. Nearby Roosevelt Lake and Tonto National Forest offer opportunities for boating, swimming, hiking, and fishing.
