The intern will have an opportunity to work with park rangers, the Chief of Interpretation, park guides, volunteers, and interns at Tonto National Monument, while learning about the significant natural and cultural resources of the Sonoran Desert. Job duties will include staffing the visitor center, collecting fees, providing information at the Lower Cliff Dwelling, developing and presenting interpretive programs, and assisting with special events.

Through this experience, the intern will learn about the Salado Culture, the mission of the National Park Service, the Antiquities Act of 1906, and the important role public lands play in safeguarding natural and cultural resources. The intern will gain invaluable work experience in a range of duties, from dealing with the public to creating engaging interpretive programs. This professional experience might lead to future career opportunities with the National Park Service and/or other federal land management agencies.

Compensation amounts:
  • $1,100 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $325 - weekly living allowance
  • Housing

  • Roosevelt, Arizona is a rural area in the southern part of the state. It is very scenic surrounded by saguaros and Roosevelt Lake. The climate is hot with average daytime high temperatures in the 90s and 100s during the summer months, but mild in the winter months.
  • There will opportunities to work with staff members on special projects including education programs and design of interpretive signage.
  • There are a number of excellent cultural resources at the site to learn about the Salado and archaeology in the Southwest. Nearby Roosevelt Lake and Tonto National Forest offers opportunities for boating, swimming, hiking, and fishing.
