You will help visitors make their visit a memorable one by helping them make connections with the park and its resources.

• Perform both natural and cultural interpretation services including informal visitor contacts at the South Unit and Painted Canyon Visitor Centers.
• Provide formal interpretation including tours of Theodore Roosevelt’s Maltese Cross Cabin, geology talks and rim walks. Opportunities for additional programs will be provided, depending upon the Intern’s interest.
• Conduct retail sales of merchandise for Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association.
• Participate in special events such as Fourth of July and NPS Founders Day. Most contacts are with the general public and other park staff. Contacts are made to facilitate effective park operations; to provide visitors with a safe, meaningful and enjoyable visit; and to interpret the natural and cultural resources of the park.

Required Skills: Valid driver’s license; ability and willingness to submit to a required criminal history background check; interest in working with the public on a daily basis.

Desired Skills: Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to accurately complete cash and credit card transactions; ability and willingness to work as part of a team; ability and willingness to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds.

This position is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.
  • Headquarters area in Medora, ND. Small town; restaurants, shops, gas, post office, library available within walking distance.
  • 2-week interpretive training, including interpretive skills, information about the natural and cultural resources of the park & the surrounding area; Standard First Aid/AED/CPR training & certification; mentoring & coaching in interpretive skills.
  • The park has a many hiking trails and the only Congressionally designated Wilderness in the northern Great Plains.
