Denali National Park and Preserve is seeking an Interpretation Intern who is fluent in Mandarin to provide interpretation and orientation at Denali’s Winter Visitor Center. The intern will hone public speaking and communication skills by providing informal interpretation, orientation, and safety information at the visitor center (75%), answering the park information lines (10%), presenting education programs via video-conference (5%), developing original, formal interpretive programs (5%), and roving/hiking park trails to make informal visitor contacts (5%). The intern will also help with English-Mandarin translation projects.
 
Training
The park will provide hands-on training on interpretation skills, park safety and logistics, and the natural/cultural history of Denali at the start of the internship. Opportunities exist throughout the season for additional, hands-on training depending on the intern’s interests. The intern is encouraged to explore the park and surrounding public lands to become a better source of area information. Opportunities may also exist for working with other park divisions, including resource management, in order to learn more about potential careers.
 
Objectives
The Interpretation Intern will:
1)   Be introduced to interpretation careers including informal visitor contacts, informal demonstrations, and formal talks.
2)   Become knowledgeable about and comfortable with working in, and interpreting to the public, the natural and cultural resources found in Denali National Park & Preserve and Interior Alaska.
3)   Develop and deliver one or more short interpretive programs that effectively foster opportunities for visitors to connect with the park and impart accurate park resource and safety information to visitors.
For each of the above, the intern will be trained, evaluated and receive coaching throughout the season.

Compensation amounts:
  • $1,300 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $260 - weekly living allowance
  • Housing

*All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

Start and end dates are flexible. This position is NOT eligible for an AmeriCorps education award

  • The intern will work as part of a small and supportive team at Denali’s Murie Science and Learning Center, which doubles as the park’s winter visitor center. Park housing is available a mile away, with transportation available if needed. Denali is a vibrant winter community with dozens of people working and living nearby.
  • The park will provide hands-on training on interpretation skills, park safety and logistics, and the natural/cultural history of Denali at the start of the internship. Opportunities exist throughout the season for additional, hands-on trainings.
  • Winter is a wonderful time to recreate in Denali, if you’re up for cold and snow. Common outdoor activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and backcountry camping. Indoor activities often revolve around games, dinners, crafts, and movies.
