Homegrown is a Phipps program dedicated to increasing community access to fresh produce, promoting better food choices, and improving the overall health of families and children. Since its inception in 2013, Homegrown has installed over 300 raised-bed vegetable gardens at households in underserved neighborhoods and provided mentorship and resources to hundreds of community members.

The Homegrown Community Outreach Intern will work with our Garden Installation Coordinator and seasonal interns and staff from March through October 2021. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

A. Participant Outreach
  1. Assist with site visits prior to installation and with follow-up garden check-ins, taking photos and recording information.
  2. Send monthly class reminders via text, email and phone calls to participants.
  3. Assist with mailings and communication.
  4. Represent Homegrown at various community events virtually and in neighborhoods served; help with tabling, activities, outreach and recruitment.
  5. Assist in the planning of cooking classes hosted by Phipps Homegrown virtually and at Phipps Botany Hall Teaching Kitchen.
  6. Prepare materials for any in-person or virtual gardening classes
  7. Assist with administration of pre- and post-season participant surveying including in-person interviews, and mailed and emailed evaluation sheets.
  8. Assist with other program and organizational duties as needed.


B. Participant Support

  1. Assist the Homegrown Installation Coordinator with seed starting and seedling care as needed.
  2. Assist the Homegrown Installation Coordinator to deliver early spring compost.
  3. Assist with garden installs and other work as needed.


C. Community Seed Starting

  1. Oversee seed starting in early spring at Repair the World and Operation Better Block.
  2. Support the annual seedling sale and find ways to expand its reach.


Candidates should have previous experience with community outreach and education, as well as some hands-on landscaping or vegetable gardening experience. This position is partly physically demanding and includes manual labor, such as heavy lifting, kneeling, standing, and working outdoors in weather conditions.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are a must as this position requires a lot of interaction with program participants, community partners, and the public. Candidate should have the ability to take initiative and be motivated to take the lead to complete assignments.  


A personal vehicle is required, as events will often require transportation to sites in the service area. Phipps will reimburse standard mileage for all business miles traveled. 

Compensation includes a $225/week living stipend, $800/month housing stipend, $1,100 elocation stipend, mileage, and, upon successful completion of service, a $,4336.50 AmeriCorps Education Award.

Before an applicant to this position can begin their term of service, they must complete and pass a three part background check which is comprised of the NSOPW, the two state repository check and an FBI fingerprint check.  Specific instructions on how to complete this requirement will be provided upon an official offer.   

Position is pending funding and interviews will not begin until funding has been finalized.

  • The offices for Homegrown are located at Phipps Garden Center, 1059 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232. Some work will be done at this location, as well as within the communities of Homewood, Lincoln – Lemington, Belmar, East Hills, Larimer and nearby communities. Some work from home may also be required depending on circumstances.
