Interns will work daily on trail projects as assigned. They will need to be available to attend a chainsaw work-skills training in May as well. 

The work will include, but not limited, to brushing trail corridors, improving trail tread (i.e. hauling gravel by wheelbarrow), repairing board walk, assist in the removal of fallen trees, improving trail drainage, and working with local volunteers on group projects.  A person will be successful in this position if they can work in the field daily in all types of weather conditions, can develop a great partnership with the other intern and use their skills to improve Girdwood trails.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Trail tread maintenance and development
  • Trail building
  • Erosion Control and Trail Drainage maintenance
  • Trimming Vegetation
  • Materials Transport

Required Skills:

  • Good work ethics and maintain a strong sense of crew morale
  • Be in good physical condition
  • Able to work safely in a remote location
  • Able to work in adverse weather and rugged terrain
  • Able to lift 60 lbs.  for long distance over difficult terrain
  • Possess working knowledge of trail maintenance and building basics
  • Understand how to use basic hand and power tools
  • Possess good public relation skills
  • Chain saw certification preferred
  • SCA Work Skills Training is available for this position. Training will take place near Girdwood and will start in mid-May, Dates TBD

Uniforms:

  • No uniform required.
  • Provide own leather work boots, rubber boots, and raingear. 
  • Work gloves and other safety work gear will be provided to you.

Compensation:

  • $1,300 One-time travel allowance is provided
  • $280 weekly stipend is provided for 12 weeks
  • $800 monthly housing allowance is provided for 3 months

*This position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education award of $1,566 upon successful completion of 450 hours of service
