Front Line team members will spend the summer working and learning within the administration program of the Superior National Forest.  This work includes performing various tasks associated with public service and staffing at a visitor center. These positions assist with issuing a variety of permits including Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) visitor permits, gravel permits, and special use permit applications.  Interns will also assist in providing visitor education to Forest users including Wilderness Leave No Trace programs, to help to prevent resource damage and minimize impact on the land. Additional duties include answering phones, responding to emails, and assisting a variety of District personnel with administrative functions.  This position is a great introduction to work in the Forest Service as front line team members provide a direct conduit between Forest users and District Staff

Position Duties include:
- Issuing BWCAW Permits 
- Providing Leave-No-Trace education based upon an existing curriculum
- Answering phones and emails
- Supporting district functional areas with administrative duties (printing, copying, filing)
- Selling maps and gift store merchandise
- Providing information related to various permits (special use, gravel, firewood, etc)

Compensation details:
  • $300/week Living Allowance
  • $1,100 Travel Allowance, paid once
  • Housing provided on site
  • Eligible for Public Land Corp (PLC) hiring authority upon satisfactory completion of the internship

Note: This position is not eligible for the AmeriCorps Education Award.

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance. 

Conditions of Employment
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants will be required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined in SCA’s COVID Management plan, which can be found here.
