SCA Interns assigned to this position are tasked with working hand in hand with the Supervisory Fish Biologist as he/she inspects and monitors dam operations for safe fish passage operations (turbine units, spillway, fish collection systems, guidance apparatuses, weir gates and hydrologic regimes) in accordance with established criteria. Responsible for the physiological condition of fish while in the collection facility or transportation barges and in operational procedures and acts as technical advisor during implementation of facility modifications. Responsible for the development, scheduling, direction and evaluation of the juvenile fish passage, collection, and transportation program at the operating project.
Intern will monitor and maintain proper operation of the bypass gallery orifices, gate wells, juvenile fish up well, water eliminator, wet separator, electronic counting system, sample holding tank, raceways, transport barge, and other collection equipment. Monitor’s condition of fish through observations of their physical characteristics, behavior, and response to existing facility holding conditions. Notifies supervisory biologist of observations made.
Collects data, performs analyses on data and provides detailed reports at specific intervals on equipment operation, hourly fish collection, raceway mortalities, truck and barge loading densities, fish behavior in raceways and transport vehicles, and dissolved gas levels. Assists with fish sampling operations in a variety of facility locations using standard biological techniques. Examines fish samples and learns to be able to accurately determine species composition, number per pound, identification of brands and fin clips, descaling rates, general condition for indications of potential problems with the fish or facilities, etc. Responsible for using data, subsequent analyses, and interpretation to make suggestions regarding facility operation, loading techniques, etc., within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
May be required to independently develop a comprehensive written report on some aspect of the fish transportation program.
Assists with loading fish transport barges and tractor-trailers. Sets up loading lines, crowds’ fish, removes debris from the raceways, observes fish behavior, monitors, and adjusts water levels in a variety of locations, etc.
SKILL & KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of basic principles of biological science to collect data and perform analysis and write reports. General biological knowledge of technical work and technical biological criteria pertaining to collection and transportation of juvenile fish.
The ability to gain Knowledge in equipment operation such as bypass gallery orifices, gate wells, juvenile fish up well, water eliminator, and other collection equipment and be able to perform tasks such as loading fish-transport barges and tractor-trailers and perform shift work.
The SCA intern should have the ability to use considerable judgment to make sound determinations and proper decisions for handling or solving situations. Excellent communication skills and techniques to make presentations and briefings, train and advise. The ability to draft and review plans, reports, correspondence, etc. The ability to collect water, air, or other samples. Skill and ability to assist in the monitoring and analysis of data; recommend preventative or corrective procedures. Ability to quickly learn multipurpose hydroelectric project operations and maintenance to assure plans and procedures developed and training provided are compatible and effective.
