SCA NYS Parks Corps Overview: The SCA New York State Parks Corps covers four regions of New York State: Allegany, Central, Finger Lakes, and Thousand Islands. Corps members serve at one of these host sites at the state parks in their region. Service activities range from providing environmental education and interpretation, to trail restoration and volunteer initiatives. Members join together regularly for trainings, service projects, or other community events. The mission of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources.

Purpose of the Program: To design, market, and deliver formal interpretive programs at each park: Lake Erie State Park and Long Point State Park

AmeriCorps Member Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Continue to develop interpretive programs for onsite delivery at Lake Erie State Park and Long Point on Chautauqua State Park that will include but are not limited to a variety of potential interests such as: natural history including erosion and water quality issues, birding, native plant species, invasive plant species, local, wildlife, etc. Lake Erie and Long Point on Chautauqua State Parks each have over 100,000 visitors annually.
  • Expand upon the groundwork laid by the previous Intern by increasing publicity of programming offered at each park
  • Design, promote and present programs at the two state parks. Each park will have at least three programs presented each week during the “on” season Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. These programs will be developed, designed and packaged so that delivery could be achieved by future seasonal park Interpreters in an off-the-shelf manner.
  • Work with park managers to plan “I Love My Park Day” event at Long Point in early May and “Kick-Off to Summer” event at Lake Erie in late June.
  • The SCA Environmental Interpreter will be housed in Allegany State Park, office workspace will be provided at Midway State Park, and programs will be delivered at Long Point on Chautauqua and Lake Erie State Parks. The experience will truly offer a wide range of resources and experiences throughout the region. Those resources will include the opportunity to work with and be supported by the Allegany Interpretive staff along with various other trainings and opportunities as they occur.

Performance Goals:
Goal 1:  Create, market and deliver at least three programs presented each week during the “on” season, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Package these programs for use by future interns and park staff.

Goal 2: “I Love My Park Day” at Long Point in early May – act as point of contact, coordinate and work with the park manager to plan for, market and run the day of the event.

Goal 3: “Kick-Off to Summer” at Lake Erie in late June– act as point of contact, coordinate and work with the park manager to plan for, market and run the day of the event.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and ability to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Must be detail-oriented, dependable, self-motivated and can work very well independently
  • Ability to physically move through the environment where the programs are being conducted; to include, walking, hiking, reaching, lifting, squatting, crawling etc. in all seasons and weather
  • Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
  • Over 21 preferred but not required
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a background check


  • All NYS Parks Corps members receive a taxable $200/week living allowance and EITHER housing provided OR a taxable $550/month housing allowance
  • Upon successful completion of the term, members receive a taxable Segal Education Award through AmeriCorps
  • Student loan forbearance and interest repayments for federal student loan through AmeriCorps
  • Eligible for free health insurance
  • Eligible for childcare assistance through AmeriCorps

Training Opportunities: All Parks Corps members receive Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Trail Skills, Project WET, Project WILD and Project Learning Tree curricula, and professional development. Optional trainings include Leave No Trace, American Canoe Association Level 1, and other opportunities that arise.

  • Office space for the position is located at Midway State Park, and provided housing is a 45 minute commute from office at Allegany State Park. Educational Programs will require travel to Long Point and Lake Erie State Parks.
