The primary duties of the Education Program Intern will include working with a team of park rangers to assist with scheduling and conducting education programs about Chamizal National Memorial and the National Park Service mission with an emphasis on the 4th grade Every Kid In a Park (EKIP) initiative. This will involve both classroom programs at local schools and at the memorial. Other duties include assisting with Junior Ranger programs, community outreach events,  our annual Chamizal Cultural Festival in October and other special events, including the opening of our new permanent museum exhibits. There will also be the opportunity to assist with park operations in our Visitor Center and Museum, social media, graphic design, and more depending on the skills and interests of the intern in relation to projects. If fluent in Spanish, intern may also have the opportunity to assist with translation projects.

Please note that we are awaiting the status of grant funding that could extend this internship through the end of next school year June, 2020, an additional 22 weeks.
  • Chamizal National Memorial is an urban park located in El Paso, Texas, part of the world’s largest international border metroplex which includes Ciudad Juárez , Chihuahua, Mexico. El Paso is located within the Chihuahuan Desert and is at the base of the Franklin Mountains. Public transportation provides access throughout El Paso, including stops directly in front of Chamizal National Memorial. Six other national parks are within 3-4 hours’ driving time of Chamizal National Memorial. There is also an inter-city bus which provides transportation to nearby Las Cruces, New Mexico. The intern will work both indoors in park offices and the park cultural center as well as outdoors on the grounds of the memorial. Work may include indoor or outdoor work at off-site locations during public outreach activities and events hosted by area recreation centers, parks, or schools. The park grounds include walking trails, picnic areas, and an outdoor stage for special events. Temperatures during the summer months can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Though there is ample sunshine during the summer, July, August, and September are affected by the North American Monsoon which often brings afternoon thunderstorms.
  • Hands-on experience will be supplemented by Community Engagement and on-line training. Intern will obtain a range of experiences common to most parks as well as experience in assisting
    with theater and musical events.

    area theaters and concert venues.
