This position focuses on four areas:

1) In the spring and fall, you’ll work with park education staff and local teachers to develop and deliver dynamic place-based education programs for youth in grades K through 12, on subjects ranging from citizen science to history, from art to ecology.

2) In summer, you’ll serve as a frontline interpreter - roving trails, staffing visitor centers, providing informal visitor engagement and formal thematic programs at two national park sites. Programs take place both indoors and outdoors.

3) In winter, you’ll work with interpretation and curatorial staff to identify one or more research project based on your interests and the needs of the park, with particular focus on bringing to light untold stories, or presenting a new or deeper take on an existing story.

4) Throughout the year, you’ll: a) provide support to the Volunteers-in-Parks program at two national parks. B) assist with the planning, promotion and execution of various events, from winter morning snowshoe walks to multi-day public events, from after-hours soirees to Sunday afternoon concerts.

This internship offers ample opportunity to exploring the many career paths in the National Park Service, as well as extensive professional development.

We are looking for an intern with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a passion for working with children and teachers, team-orientation, attention to detail, and a willingness to take a hands-on approach to work. The position will work five days per week, 8:30am-5pm, for one year starting in May 2020. Working weekends is required June through October. The schedule switches to mostly Monday through Friday in the late fall, winter, and spring, with occasional weekend work.
  • Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is located in the year-round resort community of Woodstock, Vermont – an area of great natural beauty alongside the Ottauquechee River in the foothills of the Green Mountains. The new park opened for the first time to visitors in 1998 and is the first unit of the National Park System to focus on the theme of conservation history and the changing nature of land stewardship in America. It manages and interprets the early 19th century Billings/Rockefeller mansion and grounds complex, as well as a 500-acre forest property on the slopes of Mount Tom where hiking, nature study, and cross-country skiing are popular with visitors.

    Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park is located in the rural New Hampshire town of Cornish, just across the river from Windsor, Vermont. The park preserves and interprets the home, studios and gardens of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America’s greatest sculptors, including over 100 of his artworkss, from heroic public monuments to expressive portrait reliefs, and the gold coins which changed the look of American coinage. Visitors enjoy summer concerts, hike nature trails, or explore their artistic side by participating in sculpture classes.

    The climate at both sites is moderate in spring, summer, and fall seasons; winters may be harsh. A variety of local restaurants and groceries are located in the villages of Woodstock, VT and Windsor, VT within a few miles radius of the parks.

  • The intern will participate in a mulit-day seasonal orientation, a weekly leadership development workshop, and interpretive training throughout the summer. Special training opportunities may be available in fall, winter, or spring.
  • The park hosts a variety of workshops throughout the season for the public and staff. Interns will collaborate with other area interns, and be able to participate in weekly recreation trips/activities such as swimming and hiking.
