Eastern National is partnering with the National Park Service in Hodgenville, Kentucky to introduce 4th grade students to the educational and recreational opportunities available at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park.

The intern will be responsible for working with education and interpretive staff to help students create a meaningful connection to their public lands, to learn about Abraham Lincoln and the time he spent here in growing up in Kentucky, and to foster an understanding and appreciation for National Parks.

Job duties include:
1) collaborating with area teachers to schedule Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) pre-visits and field trips,
2) preparing materials ahead of field trips,
3) assisting with leading groups during field trips to the park,
4) presenting information to student groups during virtual or in-person visits.
The long-term goals of the project are to:
1) introduce intern to education related jobs and, for some, mentor them in that direction,
2) allow intern to actively participate in a large-scale education project,
3) provide an opportunity to gain experience in partnership, outreach, and collaboration, and
4) assist in fostering a sense of stewardship of the parks and their resources.

- $340/week* Living Allowance
- $1,100* To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck

- Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,718.25, received upon successful completion of position
- Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (640hrs minimum of service)

Conditions of Employment
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants will be required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined in SCA’s COVID Management plan, which can be found here.

  • Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is located in Central Kentucky. The park is located in Hodgenville, Kentucky, a small town of about 3,000 residents. There are limited shopping and dining options. The park is about 1 hour 30 minutes south of Louisville and about 2 hours north of Nashville. The town of Elizabethtown, located about 15 miles from the park and it provides the closest places for shopping and dining.

    The park will ensure the selected individual’s success by providing proper supervision as well as pairing the intern with a veteran staff member within the Division of Interpretation that will serve as a mentor. The mentor will be able to provide day-to-day assistance and supervision as well as be a point-of-contact for the individual when questions and concerns arise.

  • The park offers a picnic area and hiking trails at both the Birthplace and Boyhood Home Units. The selected individual will live in park housing with other SCA employees during their internship at the park.
