Work alongside a Davey Resource Group (DRG) Site Manager in counting and assessing trees of the seven-county Chicago region under the 2020 Chicago Regional Tree Census. Interns will be trained in tree ID as well as learn how to use data collection software to inventory trees in this project led by The Morton Arboretum, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. Interns will note the number, location, species, size, and condition of trees and plants within roughly 1,600 randomly chosen sample plots across the city and suburbs. Plots will include residential, commercial, public, and private land as well as a variety of land uses. Data from this study will support the development of the Chicago Region Trees Initiative, an urban forestry strategy that will guide tree planting and care in the region and will inform scientific research. Interns will be expected to be able to speak with the general public on the importance of tree inventory work as well as have the knowledge of the Morton Arboretum’s initiatives.

PROGRAM DATES: June 1- September 13, 2020 Monday through Friday; 8 hrs/day; 8 AM to 4:30 PM; There is a potential for overtime work in which interns will be paid time and a half

TRANSPORTATION: Interns will be issued a rental vehicle through the SCA. This vehicle will be used to connect with DRG staff at predetermined sample plots. Locations of sample plots are TBD based on intern geographical location.

COMPENSATION: $15.00/hour, 40 hours/week

QUALIFICATIONS: 21 yrs or older; valid driver’s license for 3+ years and clean driving record; Ability to legally work in the US; ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check; Ability to follow uniform expectations daily; ability to interact regularly with public while practicing social distancing guidelines (homeowners, business owners, property managers). Experience utilizing data collection software or iTree inventory software is preferred. Outdoor experience preferred. Applicants working towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in forestry or environmental sciences are encouraged.

  • This position will travel regionally within Cook County to tree inventory sites determined in 2010, along side Davey Resource Group staff during the summer for 18 weeks.
