Curatorial Museum Intern

Expected Dates
May 14, 2018 to August 3, 2018
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park
Position ID
The interns will receive an orientation to the park and curatorial training. Accessioning is the process of officially accepting items into the park’s museum collection. It establishes legal custody and ownership, and provides information on how the park acquired items. The documentation is kept in an Accession Folder – the intern’s main project will be to conduct a survey in order to categorize the folders for accuracy. The NPS Museum Handbook, Part II, Chapter 2 will serve as a guide for the ideal accession folder. As applicable and to the extent possible, the intern will rectify discrepancies – for example, add missing documentation and determine the status of old loans.
Additionally, in order to gain a holistic curatorial experience, the intern will author social media posts to increase access to the park’s museum collection, chart environmental data, implement housekeeping and integrated pest management schedules, and assist with miscellaneous curatorial tasks as the need arises – for example, accessioning and subsequent cataloging, loan object delivery and return, exhibit installation, and rehousing.
