Cumberland Island 50th Anniversary Internship

Expected Dates
October 4, 2021 to June 5, 2022
Site
Cumberland Island National Seashore
Position ID
PO-00732151

This position is the best of both worlds, working for Cumberland Island National Seashore as an event planner for its 50th anniversary efforts and living on St. Simons Island at Fort Frederica National Monument. Both are part of Georgia’s Sea Islands, a unique set of barrier islands situated off the coast and protecting the mainland of Georgia for 100 miles north to south.

Cumberland Island became a national seashore on October 23, 1972. This position will help the park put into place its plans for commemorating this date with a “kick-off” event in October of 2022 and subsequent monthly events during the park’s 50th year. The event planner will secure the program logistics for each of the planned events as much in advance of the events as possible with the time the internship allows. The person in this position will work with park staff and community members to ensure responsibilities for event coordination are clear and plans are progressing favorably toward successful events. They will also ensure the communications plan for each event is park management and region reviewed and will work with the park and community media specialist to ensure a coordinated marketing campaign. All work will be reviewed by park management during this internship with weekly briefings.

Compensation:

  • One-time travel allowance up to $650 if needed for round trip travel from interns home of record to Cumberland Island NS, and back home at the end of the Internship.
  • Weekly living allowance: $275 / week
  • Housing will be provided by the park if needed.
  • Eligible for an AmeriCorps education Award upon successful completion of the position.
  • St Marys, Georgia in Camden County is the gateway to Cumberland Island. Established in 1792, it now has a population of 17,000 in a county of 55,000. It is located 8-miles east of Interstate 95 exits 1 and 3. Cumberland Island’s mainland visitor center, museum, and administrative offices are located in its historic downtown. The island of Cumberland is located 7 nautical miles from downtown St. Marys and is only accessible by boat. It is a Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island. Here pristine maritime forests, undeveloped beaches and wide marshes whisper the stories of both man and nature. Natives, missionaries, enslaved African Americans and Wealthy Industrialists all walked here. Cumberland Island is also home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated Wilderness.
