The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) has a three part BWCAW Leave No Trace User Education Video series. Users watch the first two parts at home ahead of their trip.  Part 3 is shown during permit issuance. Our Education Intern will provide a series of virtual viewing opportunities each day to show part 3 and issue the BWCAW permit to the viewers. This is an essential educational tool for protecting the fragile wilderness ecosystem and providing a quality recreation experience.    

Environmental educator duties will include:
  • Educating visitors on the BWCAW Trip Planning Guide.
  • Delivering and assisting with BWCAW- Permit Videos.
  • Providing front-desk customer service to Forest and BWCAW visitors.
  • Issuing BWCAW Permits to visitors.

This position provides:

  • $200/week Living Allowance
  • $1,100 one-time round-trip Travel Allowance
  • Housing provided on site
  • Eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,360.00 (dependent on availability at the time of candidate selection)

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

  • Aurora, Minnesota is 60 miles north of Duluth, Minnesota. Five other small cities are located within 20 miles of Aurora. Surrounding rural communities also provide opportunities for housing outside Aurora. The local economy is based primarily on taconite mining. Tourism is also important, including income from all-season visitors. Outdoor recreational opportunities include deer and small-game hunting, snowmobiling, downhill and cross-country skiing, biking and hiking. Lakes and rivers for fishing, boating, canoeing and swimming are located within close proximity to all communities. There are numerous golf courses in the area, in addition to Giants Ridge Golf and Ski resort which is located within five miles of Aurora. Health care facilities in Aurora and Virginia include a hospital and a clinic. The K-12 public school system in Aurora and Virginia provide a curriculum including college level courses.
