Backcountry Steward - Essex Chain Lakes Primitive Area

The Essex Chain Lakes Area is located in the vast Adirondack Park of northern New York State, managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). This Backcountry Steward position requires the willingness and ability to travel by foot, canoe, and bicycle and work alone in remote, rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions.  The ability to use a map, compass and GPS unit, strong backpacking skills, canoeing skills, and self-motivation are essential.  This position will also require working and camping with other Backcountry Stewards to complete assigned trail maintenance or construction projects in nearby areas.  The Backcountry Steward will be trained at the start of the position, and will then be supervised by the DEC area manager. The travel allowance is $650 with car required. 

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
-Patrol backcountry lakes/ponds and campsites via canoe;
- Provide information and education to users relating to recreation and protection of natural resources;
- Promote Leave-No-Trace practices;
- Provide assistance and advice to users regarding trails and other recreational facilities;
- Perform routine maintenance on trails and other facilities using hand tools (e.g. hand saw, loppers, etc.) including blowdown removal, removal of debris and garbage, installing wooden trail signs and plastic trail markers;
-Work and camp with other SCA Backcountry Stewards to complete trail maintenance and construction projects;
-Take inventory measurements of specific trail and camping area conditions and patterns of use, to assist DEC in its resource management programs;
- Maintain records including a handwritten daily journal, prepare and submit reports relating to daily activities, public use, maintenance needs, and special reports as needed; and
- Other duties as assigned connected to the conservation project.

Conviction of a felony may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment.
  • The service location is located in the center of the Adirondack Park, New York State-owned Forest Preserve lands. The specific unit of State land is called the Essex Chain Lakes. With an extensive road network, eleven lakes and ponds interconnected or within portaging distance of each other to provide a 6 to 7 mile canoe route, 14 miles of Hudson River shoreline, and 8 miles of Cedar River shoreline, the tract offers abundant opportunities for public recreation including: canoeing, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, mountain biking and cross country skiing.
