Canyonlands National Park
Position ID
The Maze district of Canyonlands National Park is a remote wilderness consisting of rugged red-rock canyons with outstanding prehistoric rock markings and archeological sites. Duties may include: 
  • staffing the backcountry information station, providing trip-planning assistance to visitors (40% of time);
  • patrolling the backcountry by foot and 4WD, sometimes for multiple days and camping in remote settings (30%);
  • leading guided interpretive walks in Horseshoe Canyon (10%);
  • assisting in the district’s recycling program and/or assisting with vehicle maintenance and upkeep (10%); and
  • other duties as assigned, influenced by intern’s skill-set and interest (10%).

*It is vital that candidates be comfortable living in a REMOTE setting for extended periods of time with limited human interaction.*
Compensation amounts:

  • $1,100 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $250 - weekly living allowance
  • Housing

  *This position is NOT AmeriCorps eligible.

  • The Maze is a very remote location. Green River, UT is a two-hour drive and the location of the nearest post office & grocery store. Moab, UT, the quintessential tourist town with full amenities and entertainment, is a three-hour drive away.
  • Intern will get formal training in the natural & cultural history of the Colorado Plateau as well as NPS visitor services. Many opportunities exist for on-the-job training in park operations, interpretation, maintenance, and the local history of the area.
  • SE Utah has numerous national and state parks as well as millions of acres of public land to explore. Hiking, biking, climbing, canoeing, and rafting are just a few of the recreational activities available within a day’s drive.
