The Yellowstone Center for Resources is seeking two motivated interns to monitor avian populations and aid in avian conservation efforts across Yellowstone National Park during the 2018 breeding season.  Although Yellowstone is known for its large mammals including wolves, bison, and grizzly bears, the park is also home to approximately 150 species of breeding birds.  Interns will primarily be tasked with monitoring Trumpeter Swan and Common Loons and interacting with park visitors to help minimize disturbance to sensitive nesting habitat.  Given availability, interns will also help monitor raptor and songbird populations in a variety of habitats.

  • Yellowstone National Park, nearly 3500 square miles, is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming and overlaps into eastern Idaho as well as southern Montana. In addition to the broad diversity of wildlife which draws over 3 million visitors to the park each year, Yellowstone boasts a wide variety of habitats and geologic features, including grasslands, sage scrublands, forests, rivers, lakes, hot springs, canyons, mountains, and geysers.
The Yellowstone Center for Resources is located in the Mammoth Hot Springs complex, five miles south of the north entrance to the park. Just outside the north entrance is Gardiner, MT, an isolated town of approximately 900 residents. Gardiner is about 55 miles south of I-90 and the 7000-resident town of Livingston, MT.
  • Interns will be trained in survey techniques and in backcountry safety.
  • The park and the abundant surrounding public lands, including the Gallatin National Forest and the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, boast numerous opportunities to observe wildlife, hike, camp, canoe, and fish.
