Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized or FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.


*High school juniors or seniors in the Tularosa Basin and Las Cruces, NM are eligible.*

Come join the staff at White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico! White Sands protects the world’s largest gypsum dunefield and surrounding desert environment.  This internship is perfect for current juniors or seniors in high school, or recent graduates.  This internship will develop multiple art-focused and science-focused programs to be conducted with visitors to White Sands.  In addition, you will develop the skills of a National Park Service Park Ranger by staffing the visitor center, designing and presenting short formal interpretive programs, and providing roving (hiking) interpretation on topics ranging from geology, paleontology, and archeology to the plants and wildlife of the park.

The position will work each Saturday and Sunday, eight hours per day, and may include the evening. During school breaks, additional work time will be scheduled.

Conditions often require working outside in hot, windy, dry weather and long periods of standing each day. This position is ideal for outgoing individuals or those looking to obtain the skills needed for a career as a park ranger or in the visitor services sector.


Compensation amounts:

  • $300 - weekly living allowance
  • $40- weekly commuting allowance

  • Alamogordo is situated at the crossroads of U.S. Highways 54, 70, and 82, which lead east into the mountains and the quaint village of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, south to the international border city of El Paso, Texas, and west to the university city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and north into the heart of the Land of Enchantment.
  • Two weeks of preparatory training including: safety topics, CPR/First Aid, interpretive program development, natural resource training, and visitor center operations.
  • The Lincoln National Forest provides many opportunities for hiking, biking, and even snow activities in the winter. There are typically many events that happen locally including movies at the zoo, parades, and rodeo.
