Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Position ID
You will assist park archaeologists with archaeological surveys, recording and monitoring archaeological sites, traditional cultural properties, and Navajo cultural landscapes. You’ll manage archaeological site files and computer databases, and possibly assist park staff with archival projects. Additional projects relating to the interpretation of cultural resources may be developed independently for the interpretation division. Work is primarily performed in the backcountry and will require camping for significant periods of time. There will be numerous opportunities to explore the canyon and neighboring parks and archaeological sites. American Indian events such as Pow-Wows, festivals, and rodeos take place throughput the season.

  • Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located in the center of the Navajo Nation and is located 3 miles from Chinle, Arizona, population 5347. Chinle has gas stations, supermarkets, motels, churches, etc. however, medical facilities are 40 miles away. The climate is semi-arid to mountainous; park headquarters is at an elevation of 5,500 feet.
  • Interns will be trained in archaeological survey, monitoring and documentation methods. In addition, they will be trained in backcountry safety and oriented to NPS management and philosophy.
  • Interns will have numerous opportunities to learn about southwestern cultural history through various NPS summer programs and access to the Canyon de Chelly library.
