General Overview:

This SCA alumni trail crew will consist of 10 alumni who have previous trail building and maintenance experience. 

SCA’s primary project partner, Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) will provide work tools, other PPE, communal cooking equipment, and project work guidance. USFS staff will ensure potable water is adequately supplied for hydration and cooking purposes. 

It is essential that candidates possess a strong fitness level as this project will require physical labor and up to 2 miles of hiking each day with tools in hand. 

Project details:

Work will take place on the Helena Ranger District of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest - an approximately one and a half hour drive outside of Helena, MT. CDTC staff will be on site to ensure work is done to USFS specs and will provide technical leadership, certified WFRs, and lead a Job Hazard Analysis/safety talk. 

This is a high priority maintenance project occurring near Joseph Mine and south of O’Keefe mountain. Most of the work will be done at an elevation of around 6,300 feet along a 1.5 mile section of trail. Expected work includes installing turnpikes (12’-16’ long) and tread work, including outsloping and backsloping. 

There is very limited cell reception at the campsite and worksite.

Travel details:
  • Participants will be given Southwest Airlines vouchers to travel from a SW hub city to Spokane, WA and back from. Tickets should be booked so as to arrive in Spokane no later than July 13th. Travel back home should be booked from Spokane, WA on July 21st or later. SCA will cover the cost of hotel rooms for the nights of July 13th and July 20th only and will reserve a block of rooms for these dates ahead of time. 

Additional details:

  • All participants will be required to raise at least $500 to offset costs through a peer to peer fundraising platform. Support will be provided by SCA staff to ensure success.
