Recreation and Trail Management Interns at Allegheny National Forest

INTRODUCTION

This position is located on a Forest Service unit. Incumbent performs a variety of work in support of the unit recreation program

Major Duties
  • Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Facilitates daily activities, maintenance schedules, and cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans. Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas.
  • Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s).
  • Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.
  • Maintains both roadside and/or backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalizes sites where necessary to control use and prevent resource damage. 
  • Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management and safety.
  • Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations.  Provides information on resource management practices, regulations, and current conditions.
  • Collects, compiles, and summarizes information for recreation data management systems.  Provides input for programming and planning.
  • Paver block Project: Working with FS personnel, install paver blocks (prefabricated concrete blocks that stabilize the trail surface and are filled with gravel to provide drainage and an even running surface) on the ATV Trail Network.
  • ATV Trail Maintenance Projects: Working with FS personnel, the crew will perform basic trail maintenance on the ATV Trail Network. This can include tread work, drainage structures, bridge repairs, rock stabilization, brushing, tree removal, step repairs, sign and kiosk repairs and installation.
  • General Trail Maintenance Projects: Working with FS personnel, the crew will perform basic trail maintenance on additional Trail Networks within Allegheny National Forest. This can include tread work, drainage structures, bridge repairs, rock stabilization, brushing, tree removal, step repairs, sign and kiosk repairs and installation.
  • Checks visitor use of recreation facilities.  Monitors compliance with recreation area rules and regulations of parking, campfires, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing.  Reports violations to supervisor. 
  • Cleans recreation areas and facilities and maintains improvements.

This position provides:
- $225 weekly Living Allowance*
- $1100 one-time round-trip Travel Allowance*
- $700 monthly Housing Allowance*

The AmeriCorps Education Award received upon successful completion of this position is $1,678.57 

*All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance. 

Conditions of Employment
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.

  • Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, the ANF is composed of plateau tops with elevations up to approximately 2,300 feet and valleys down to approximately 1,000 feet above sea level. The forest is approximately 517,000 acres and includes land in Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties in the northwestern corner of the state.
