Interns will work in partnership with the American Heart Association to offer healthy-living activities designed to connect members of culturally diverse communities in Brooklyn and Queens with outdoor recreation, exploration and learning opportunities available in Gateway National Recreation Area. 
Interns that are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Russian or Arabic are encouraged to apply and will participate in a moderate daily fitness program paired with active outdoor learning experiences. As a team, they outreach to underserved communities to encourage use of the park and provide fun heart-healthy activities for people of all ages. Interns will learn about urban ecology, communication and the health related connections between people and place. They will learn and then lead activities such as: Biking; Hiking; Wildlife Observation; Archery; Camping; Ethnobotany / Nutrition; Kayaking; Orienteering; Sailing
 
Interns must have the ability to: communicate effectively; conduct online research and outreach using social media; ride a single-speed bicycle, or willing to practice and learn; work outdoors in rugged settings and changeable weather

Interns must present a medical evaluation affirming eligibility for participation in a fitness program.

NOTE: The Intern must be a US Citizen, National, or lawful permanent resident alien for eligibility in the AmeriCorps Education Award Program.
