Performs all aspects of trail maintenance and construction on front country and backcountry trails. Examples of the work that will be performed include: clear brush and fallen logs from trail corridor; cleans, repairs, and constructs log or rock drains and waterbars; installs log or rock stairs and check steps; constructs and maintains rock and log structures such as turnpikes, crib walls, rip rap, rock and log retaining walls; constructs and repairs wet stone masonry and concrete structures; constructs new segments of trail and performs rehabilitation and restoration on abandoned or heavily impacted sections of trail. Work will occasionally include wire fence maintenance and repair.
Uses and maintains shovels, picks, rakes, axes, pulaskis, various types of saws (e.g., crosscut, pole, limbing etc.), loppers, chisels, sledgehammers, single jacks, rock bars, measureing tapes, levels, squares, scribes, gasoline powered hammer drills, rock saws, chainsaws and other trade tools when performing trail maintenance and construction duties.
The work performed requires very heavy physical effort, routinely lifts, pushes and pulls objects weighing over 50 lbs, and regularly hikes up to 15 miles while carrying up to a 50 lb pack.
Must have basic computer skills and able to learn some GPS and GIS skills.
