Youth and Visitor Services Intern (PO-00735158)

Intern Duties:
Intern will assist with the preparations and facilitation of two different Kenai Refuge summer day camps (for ages 6-11; 2nd-5th graders), 50%; presenting environmental education and wildlife interpretive nature programs,10%; assist ranger staff in visitor center, campgrounds, fishing area patrols, and 
roving contacts, 30%; 
and other field projects and trail/cabin patrol work, 10%.  

Compensation amounts include:

  • $1,300 – one time RT travel allowance
  • $250 – weekly living allowance
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($1,718.25 education award)
  • Housing provided

It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

Training Provided: Safety training - bear safety awareness and CPR/First Aid. Communication skills training - one on one with visitors, formal presentations such as walks and talks, and written projects such as writing a local newspaper article.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Refuge staff are wonderful educational resources with a variety of disciplines Including environmental ED, fire ecology, interpretation, law enforcement, and wildlife biology. Rec opportunities include wildlife viewing, hiking, canoeing, and fishing.

Professional Development Opportunities: Experience and skill building in visitor service, environmental education, and interpretation as well as exposure to a federal government job, the USFWS system, operation, and policy.  Mentoring provided by the Education Specialist and visitor service staff. Travel, free housing, and a stipend provided through SCA.

Partner will provide seasonal housing, on-site trailer, owned bunkhouse, etc.

Housing will be in 10 x 12 heated cabins (up to 4 people per cabin during summer) with a common shower house/bathroom/laundry/cooking area, located at Headquarters in Soldotna, AK. Each cabin will consist of the same gender.  Bedding, towels, dishes, pots, and pans are provided.  It is 1 1/2 to 2 miles into town and services.  Cabins are not ADA compliant.  There are 4 steps to each cabin and a gravel access area (not paved).
