Wildlife Management Intern (PO-00734389)

Please read: Preference will be given to local candidates already residing in Hawaii.

Duties: Control introduced predators (primarily non-native rats, mongooses, and feral cats) via trapping to protect threatened and endangered (T&E) birds and control pests, 75%; monitor T&E birds (Hawaiian goose and Hawaiian petrel) for nesting activity and production of young, 20%; data entry and other duties as assigned, 5%. Daily solo hiking/backpacking over rugged, steep volcanic terrain at high elevations (6000-10,000 ft.) in harsh weather conditions and includes 3-4 day backcountry trips.

Compensation amounts:

  • $450 – weekly living allowance
  • $1,300 – one time RT travel allowance
  • $1,375 – duty related travel (available for local intern selections to use for commuting costs)
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($1,718.25 Education Award)

Training Provided: In-park training opportunities include: trapping techniques, endangered wildlife monitoring and surveying, CPR and 1st aid. Helicopter safety training may be available.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Educational opportunities are available through park training programs. Recreational opportunities include in-park hiking, and various out-of-park activities including beach activities, biking, movies, etc.

Vehicle is not necessary, but recommended. Transportation is provided only for necessary shopping. Recreational transportation is not available. Interns may seek rides from employees on-site.

Housing is not guaranteed but based on availability which varies seasonally.  Park housing consists of co-ed shared sleeping/living, kitchen, bathroom (shower/toilet), and laundry facilities, all within a short walking distance to our office.
