Wilderness Steward (PO-00731912)

The Green Mountain National Forest interns will work primarily in the following Congressionally designated wilderness areas: Breadloaf, Joseph Battell, Big Branch, Peru Peak, Lye Brook, and Glastenbury Wilderness. Intern activities will include the following tasks: educational outreach, environmental stewardship, invasive plant removal, trail maintenance, and dispersed recreation site maintenance and monitoring.  

Interns will travel on foot throughout these areas, making visitor contacts, maintaining hiking trails with hand tools, eradicating non-native invasive plants, conducting campsite inventories, and monitoring the natural resources. Education will focus on wilderness stewardship.

Compensation (pre-tax):
– $160/week Living Allowance
– $1,100 To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck
– Housing provided
– Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,374, received upon successful completion of position

Training Provided: Depending on timing/funding, training opportunities may include: wilderness management and ethics/Leave No Trace; crosscut saw certification; First Aid/CPR.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Interns will work with USFS resource specialists with opportunities to learn about recreation, botany, wildlife, and hydrology/soils. Recreation opportunities in Vermont are diverse: hiking, biking, swimming, river tubing, visiting rural towns/festivals.

We have crew housing quarters that includes private rooms, bunkrooms, a shared living space, and a shared kitchen. The 3 interns would share 1 bunkroom. The Forest Service does not currently prohibit varied genders from sharing the bunkroom so we defer to SCA policies if mixed gender cohabitation is permissible.
