Visitor Services & Outreach Intern (PO-00734294)

Become a member of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge's visitor center team in Homer, AK!
 
Major duties for the position include presenting educational and interpretive programs, staffing the visitor center and providing information about the area, and contributing to the Refuge’s social media page. In addition to these primary duties, the intern will also have the opportunity to update displays and bulletin boards, and perform roving interpretation on our nature trail.
 
These experiences will provide the intern with the opportunity to reach a diverse group of people and to develop knowledge and appreciation of the environment and the National Wildlife Refuge System.  During the season, the intern will have an opportunity to work with a variety of partners including government agencies, conservation organizations, and the refuge’s volunteer group.

Compensation amounts:

  • $280 – weekly living allowance
  • $1300 – RT travel stipend
  • FWS bunkhouse housing
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($1,718.25 education award)

Training Provided: Agency orientation and visitor center operations, field trip across Kachemak Bay, week-long Master Naturalist course, first aid & CPR certification, interpretive program design and delivery.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Abundant opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking, tidepooling, photography and more. Just across the Bay is the state’s only designated wilderness park where you can enjoy views of glaciers and marine wildlife, and over 90 miles of trails.

Professional Development Opportunities: Ability to work alongside FWS staff and learn about agency culture, procedures, requirements, and job opportunities.

Four bedroom co-ed shared house.  The intern will likely share a room.  (If required, it will be a same-gender only.) Living room, restrooms, laundry, and kitchen are shared with other interns.  Bikes available for use on-site. Approximately 0.5 miles from Visitor Center.
