Visitor Services and Interpretation Intern (PO-00735328)

Join us in working in America’s largest national park! With provided training, you will research, prepare, and present formal and informal interpretive programs including talks and guided walks.

You will be working in the Interpretation Division of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve at Copper Center. You will work at a visitor center desk to provide assistance with trip planning and orientation for park visitors, provide wilderness trip planning, answer phones, and introduce the park film. You will also prepare and present up to three, formal interpretive programs. You may also issue federal subsistence hunting and fishing permits, in addition to ORV permits.

Highly qualified applicants should have good public speaking, writing and research skills, and have a friendly and cheerful personality in order to work well with the public. You must have the ability to receive instructions and work independently. You must be willing to live in a remote area with minimal amenities, and be able to live in rustic housing with a roommate.

Compensation amounts:

  • $600/week living allowance
  • $1300 one-time round-trip travel stipend
  • $100/month housing stipend
  • $200 duty-related reimbursable expenses for miscellaneous uniform items
  • This position is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Award

Training Provided: Two weeks of interpretive training that include interpretive skills, cultural and natural resources, on-site logistics, and field trips to other districts within the park. Other training may include backcountry skills, bear safety and CPR/First Aid.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Opportunities may include working with other divisions, access to the backcountry, full-day roves, river & hiking trips on work time, and orientation over-flights. There are opportunities to hike and explore with coworkers on weekends.

If you are not planning to bring a vehicle, it may be difficult to explore the area and the rest of the park. A bike will be provided for local commuting and exploring.

SCA interns will be in shared housing with roommates. Shared housing means that you cannot bring a spouse, partner, or pets. Park housing for SCA interns is located in Glennallen about 12 miles from the work site (Copper Center) or on-site about 1/4 mile from the Copper Center Visitor Center. A bicycle will be provided. You will possibly share with one other same-sex roommate a small, one-room cabin, with propane heat & lights and electricity. Interns share a separate common area with several other co-workers. This common area has electricity, kitchen, washer/dryer, and bathroom facilities. There is a landline phone located in the housing area for emergency and local calls.  Calling cards must be used for long distance calls. Cell phone coverage is either really reliable or non-existent, depending on your carrier. Internet is not provided, but there may be options for purchasing public wifi. Seasonal housing quarters are considered to be very rustic living conditions, in a secluded area. There is not a lot of privacy. You must be able to adapt to these types of living conditions.
