Species Protection and Habitat Development Intern (PO-00735127)

The NS Mayport requires a single SCA Intern to assist Navy Natural Resource Manager (NRM) with field surveys.
Specific duties entail:
 Conduct sea turtle nesting surveys, nest inventories, mark nests, map nests using GIS, train and schedule
volunteers for sea turtle surveys, and complete end-of-season sea turtle nesting reports.
 Delineate and remove invasive plants.
 Survey and monitor gopher tortoise burrows.
 Conduct shorebird beach and rooftop surveys at least once a month and enter data into databases.
 Maintain and update manatee data collected monthly by Port Operations.
 Change dune crossover signs bi-weekly.
 Identify and manage dead and injured wildlife; transport injured wildlife to rehab facilities.
 Navy natural resources personnel shall have substantial involvement in all of these tasks.

Living Allowance: $300 per week
Travel Allowance: $1,100.00 one-time
Commuter Allowance: $50.00 per week
Duty-related travel/expenses: Up to $200.00 one-time (reimbursable)
Housing Allowance: $1,000.00 per month

This position qualifies for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

Training Provided: Attend local seminars at Guana Park or other locations within 50 miles of Naval Station Mayport. Marine turtle permit training on how to conduct nesting surveys and inventories. Marine turtle permit training on responding to stranding and salvage events

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Participate in Invasive Species Working Group meetings and events. Participate in Shorebird Alliance Meetings. Attend annual sea turtle training.
