This project is for an intern to support the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation program on on the Sierra National Forest. The OHV Program is responsible for maintaining and monitoring green sticker roads and trails, as well as communicating with and educating members of the public that come to the Forest to recreate. To maintain our trails, we work closely with local 4-wheel drive clubs and individuals to complete routine maintenance on the trails as well as larger projects. Routine maintenance includes clearing downed trees and brush, replacing trail signs, maintaining water control features (such as waterbars), cleaning dispersed campsites, removing hazard trees, and repairing trail tread. Larger projects include things such as replacing bridges, removing, or installing trail delineation and protection features, repairing hill climbs and rock obstacles on trails.
We educate members of the public about all aspects of off-roading and forest recreation. This includes information about forest rules and regulations, OHV rules and regulations, OHV and general recreation opportunities, safe driving, and riding behaviors, Tread Lightly!, and Leave No Trace principles. The OHV Department oversees popular areas and trails such as the Bald Mountain OHV area, Red Mountain OHV trails, Swamp Lake OHV Trail, and the Dusy-Ershim OHV Trail. These areas range from two track dirt roads to large rock strewn trails that must be driven over. To help us complete our work, we use ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and Jeeps. While we have fun working, it is hard work with a lot of good people.
